A bit about me

Reflection

Are you wondering what I'm doing here? Me too!

I'm Ruth. I love many things, including the outdoors, sport, Jesus, being silly and being serious (not necessarily in that order). I'm also a qualified and experienced clinical psychologist, who has worked in the NHS for over a decade.

When I was working with families who had experience of foster care and adoption, I found myself struck by the complexity and beauty of early relationships and our approach to restoration when things didn't start out too well. Long story short, it was the lessons I learnt with those families that led to me writing my book, Divine Attachment. This is a book that tries to unpick some of the psychological ideas behind our relational development, and consider how the psychology relates to the understanding of God within the Christian faith.

Following on from the publication of that book, I wanted to protect space for more wonderings, about psychology, faith and anything else that stopped me in my tracks.

Being a psychologist I get to sit one on one with some incredible people as they try and navigate life in the best way they can. And I am also trained to think critically and curiously, not just about the distressed person in front of me, but about the systems, communities and societies around us.

There's a lot in life that's pretty impressive.

There is also lots of stuff that's beyond my understanding, gets me very confused or leaves me wondering. This can be hopeful and other times it can be sad and frustrating. It can also be all of these things, all at once. When I'm not overwhelmed by it all, I wonder.

In today's world it can feel like there's no space left for curiosity and wonder. Yet it's likely something that we need more than ever. This website is here in a small attempt to protect space for holding on to the wonder we're at risk of losing.
